The School
Highland Pre-School is located at 29 Kennebec Road in Hampden. This historic building, formerly the McKinley School, was built in 1852. It functioned as a school until the early 1960's. It was later occupied by the Hampden Post Office. The building was purchased in 1982 by Tami and Wayne Campbell, who operated the Hampden Day Care Center on the first floor and the Highland Pre-School on the second floor for twenty years. In the fall of 2003 the Highland Pre-School expanded to utilize the entire building.
Original tin walls and ceilings and oversized schoolhouse windows help to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. An added bonus is our outside play area, which encompasses 1.5 acres. It includes a large field, a wooded area complete with treehouse, and an area with playground equipment.
The Program
The Highland Pre-School program is designed to help foster the growth of the whole child -- physically, socially, emotionally, creatively and cognitively. The program includes dramatic play, music, movement, games, craft activities, art and stories, as well as field trips and other special activities.
Our goal is to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere with varied creative play materials, and a program that will help your child to develop a curiousity for the world around them and a love for learning!
To maximize child/teacher interaction, we like to maintain a pupil/teacher ratio of 8:1 with the three-year-olds, and 9:1 or 10:1 with the four and five-year-olds.
